English as a Second Language (ESL)
The main objective of this course is to provide ESL students with the skills and self-confidence needed to succeed in a mainstreamed high school program. This goal is achieved by improving the four basic skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The academic program includes reading strategies, literature, writing skills, vocabulary development and enhancement, grammar rules of English, idioms, study skills and pronunciation skills. Materials used include but are not limited to abridged classics and appropriate reading level material, and contemporary news magazines designed for ESL (Newsweek, Time). To add variety and maintain interest, activities will include movies, skits, and debates.
ESL English
ESL English is designed to build language skills. To reach this goal, the students will develop literature, grammar, vocabulary, writing and oral skills, which will enable the students to enroll in mainstreamed English classes. The course includes reading short stories and poetry to build vocabulary. Grammar assignments will reinforce the technical aspects of learning a second language by providing the foundation for oral reports and weekly papers. These skills will promote confidence as well as competency in the student's second language.
ESL U.S. History
This course will serve as an introduction to American History. Students will be encouraged to compare and contrast America's origins and culture with that of their native lands. Oral presentations and written reports will be emphasized. Grades will be based on tests, quizzes, essay assignments, and class participation.
