The Lumina Program

Program Overview

The Lumina Program is a weekly program fueled by our mission to form character, cultivate scholarship, and explore faith as students follow their curiosity to help our community grow into a more complete version of itself.

For a dedicated period each Wednesday, students embark on a semester to year long journey in which they immerse themselves into a topic of their interest. Opportunities range from community engagement and service or teacher advised programs to student led independent projects.

Our current community engagement offerings involve students partnering with the Youth Service Bureau’s School Buddies Program, the Michiana Humane Society, and the Share Foundations’ Sharing Meadows in which they build relationships each week over the course of the semester.

Our teacher advised programs allow students to delve into topics of interest in areas of robotics, photography, film, cheer, journalism, entrepreneurship,  and music. Students also have the opportunity to partner with the La Porte County Publy Library’s The Exchange Makerspace taking full advantage of a variety of tools and equipment from x-carve, 3D printing, and lazer engraving to lathe work, embroidery, sewing, and audio and visual equipment.

Our student led independent projects allow students to follow their interests wherever it may take them whether it be art, animation, sports marketing, time banking, aviation, or any topic of their interest.

The Lumina Symposium

While many of these experiences may be completed at an individual or small group level, our community remains rooted in learning together. Lumina is the plural of the Latin word lumen, meaning light and often associated with enlightenment. This program is not simply about the single enlightenment of the individual but rather the collective enlightenment of the community.

Each semester concludes with our Lumina Symposium where every student shares with the community a product of their learning in a medium of their choosing.  The format and nature of the Lumina Symposium is curated and facilitated by our student Academic Council, led by our Academic Prefect.
