La Lumiere (La Lu) students prepare for six more weeks of winter because on Sunday February 2, 2025 Phil the groundhog saw his shadow and retreated to his den. In the upcoming weeks there is much to look forward to despite the cold temperatures.
Spirit week is filled with fun themes chosen by the student body, a three day weekend is a nice respite from school work, and spring break is in a mere three weeks.
Spirit week is the week February 10 through the 14 and has themes ranging from twin day to anything but a backpack day and pajama day. Make sure to participate to show your school spirit!
President’s day is coming up on February 17 so enjoy your three day weekend before heading back to school for an uninterrupted three weeks before spring break begins on March 8.
Spring break is a full two weeks spanning into late March. Winter activities come to a close soon and spring activities will be in full swing by the time we come back from break so enjoy the cold weather while you can.

This year, La Lu has been granted the honor of having two McDonald’s All Americans on the Varsity National Basketball team. On Monday, January 27, it was announced that both Darius Adams and Jalen Haralson made the ever-coveted McDonald’s All American roster.
Out of the 12 man East roster, both La Lu students made it. Adams is committed to the University of Connecticut, and Haralson The University of Notre Dame. This isn’t the first time that this impressive feat has happened from the Lakers. In 2017, La Lu students and teammates Jaren Jackson Jr. and Brian Bowen also completed this impressive feat together.
In an Instagram post, Adams said, “Just want to take the time to thank god, only he knows the blood sweat n tears that have been put into this. #burgerboy”
Similarly, in an Instagram post of his own, Haralson said, “Just a kid from Anderson, Thank you lord.”
Together, the dynamic duo has played together on the La Lu court the past two seasons. Recently in a game against East Chicago on January 27, the duo both had impressive games. Adams contributed 16 and with Haralson putting up 14 points, the team was impressively successful, winning 90-55.

Get ready to roll out the red carpet, because it is almost time for the annual Film Fest to begin!
Film Fest is an annual La Lu tradition where students of any grade level are able to submit a video of any type to film club and have the chance to express themselves.
Throughout the year, students are encouraged to create a video or short film and submit it to Film Club so it can be processed and then eventually shown at Film Fest. Last year, many students submitted films of many different themes and genres, with some films being truly unique and carefully made.
Students gather in the Fine Arts Building to watch all the videos that were carefully created by students and rank them at the end. Film Fest promises to be an unforgettable night of creativity, storytelling, and student talent, with everything from comedy, drama, and animation.
This year, students were encouraged to experiment with different genres, explore personal themes, and even push the boundaries of what a short film can be. The true meaning to film fest is to foster creativity, build confidence, and create community.
La Lu’s student-led Film Festival is a tradition that brings our community together to celebrate student creativity in filmmaking.
Head of Film Fest, Ilaria von Eschenbach said, “The festival will take place on May 7th, and after the screenings, the student body will vote to decide which film will win the La Lumiere 2025 Oscar. This year, we’re featuring ‘JB’s Rabies Pt. 2’ by Jack Barry and Tobin Busch, as well as the sequel to last year’s winner ‘The ‘L’ by Scotty Upp. It’s always an exciting night filled with laughter, drama, and a lot of school spirit!”
Whether you are participating in the film making, in the audience, or curious about the creative process, film fest is an event that offers something valuable for everyone. So don’t miss out on this year’s film fest!

Evie DeRubbo
weather girl (inspired by the poem “I Am!” by John Clare)
I am molded by the seasons
Brittle wind blows, I shrivel and curl
Warm sun shines its spotlight, I stand a little taller
Rain pounds on green grass, I let it soak in
Ice forms on the windowpane, I try and shut it out
I am standing in the quiet of the forest
It feels as though an apocalypse came crashing down
Wiping out all human beings with their loud trucks and guns
But I am not quite alone
Birds call with the sounds of reassurance
I am pacified.
Snow crawls toward me with a roar,
I am too warm to let it freeze me.
First buds of crocus shoot up,
I am sure that the cold is slowing down.
Heat is on the horizon,
I am the master of my seasons.
I am, I am, I am.
