QuarkNet Intern, Haley Harkness, Takes on the Research World

Haley Harkness ‘19 is making her way into the research world at Notre Dame’s QuarkNet lab this summer. She cleans and tests photodetector tubes for data that will help determine which tubes to use in cosmic photo detectors. This ultimately will help the lab build upgraded optical detector components for the Compact Muon Solenoid detector, one of the two primary detectors in the Large Hadron Collider at the CERN laboratory in Switzerland. Sound like Greek to you? It’s all plain English to Haley, whose dedication to the sciences has earned her multiple medals in Science Olympiad and the Excellence in 21st Century Math and Science Award for the 2017-2018 school year. This girl is rocking the science world! #WhyLaLu #beyondtheclassroom
