La Lumiere senior Trevor Brandt, a boarding student from Manlius, New York, is one of the approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

These academically talented high school seniors will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for the some 7,600 scholarships, which are offered next spring. To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and an official from the high school must submit a detailed scholarship application in which the academic record, participation in school and community activities, leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received are demonstrated. An outstanding academic record is essential and an endorsement and recommendation by a high school official is required.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, students must take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in their junior year. Over 1.5 million juniors in over 20,000 high schools participated in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. National Merit Scholarship winners of 2021 will be announced in four nationwide news releases which are slated to begin in April and conclude in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 353,000 distinguished students who have earned the Merit Scholar title.
