The

Arts

The arts are alive at La Lumiere School. Our performing arts and fine arts curricula allow for the discovery of new creative talents and a more focused platform for the serious art student. Coursework includes painting, drawing, sculpture, studio techniques, and art history. Theater productions vary each year and feature a wide range of material from original to classic productions. Our selection of music ensembles and activities offer students the chance to make music a part of their lives.

Students at all grade levels achieve a true appreciation for artistic excellence in all forms through experience and participation. They are challenged and mentored by talented and accomplished faculty to unleash their creative energies through a variety of artistic interpretations and media.

DRAMA

The Drama Program at La Lumiere continues to grow each year. Theatre is an integral aspect of the educational process. Americansforthearts.org published a compilation of over sixty educational surveys about student involvement in the performing arts. In every survey, participation in the arts was shown to increase student retention, raise grade point averages, and elevate ACT and SAT scores. La Lumiere recognizes the need for a more extensive theatre program to add breadth and depth to the educational lives of our students.

In the elective course in Acting, students meet daily with our Drama instructor to explore dramatic literature. La Lumiere students actively learn the basics of Acting using Uta Hagen’s text Respect for the Actor, and many other theatrical resources.

Our tradition consists of a play production in the winter season and a series of student-written plays in the spring. These are exciting times for the performing arts at La Lumiere. Student involvement in theatre and music is vibrant and the standards of production with every show we present are high.

MUSIC

La Lumiere’s Music Program offers students the opportunity to expand upon a previous musical training or develop previously untrained talent by singing in a Concert Choir Vocal Ensemble. Jazz Ensemble and Concert Choir performances integrate various musical instruments, allowing students a variety of ways to use their musical abilities by: accompanying, solo performance, playing or singing in an ensemble, or simply having a good time! Voice coaching and advanced musical instruction are taught primarily through a performance-preparation method. For advanced students, courses are available in music theory.

At La Lumiere, music plays an important role in animating the life of the whole school. Whether by showcasing the many musical talents of our students at school events, working together with our drama program to put on a school musical, or singing for a school game, La Lumiere is alive with the sound of music!
