About the PREFECT Board

The 2023-2024 Prefect Council welcomes incoming Lakers on Opening Day.

The La Lumiere Prefect Board serves the school through significant contributions in all areas of the school community, including student life, admissions, community service, spiritual life, residential life, and the overall quality of the school experience.

These leaders oversee councils of selected students and establish a full range of student ownership and involvement. All prefects uphold the mission and vision of the school and what it stands for in word, and action.

DESCRIPTION OF PREFECT ROLEs

  • The Head Prefect is responsible for the overall management of the entire Prefect system. This person understands and supports the duties and responsibilities of ALL those who report to them, as well as various duties and responsibilities unique to this position. He or she is considered the voice of the students and will be in charge of promoting student-led initiatives and reviewing policies that directly impact student life. The Head Prefect is responsible for managing and shaping student attitudes and culture toward daily life at La Lumiere. The Head Prefect will meet several times each semester with the Head of School.

  • (Mentor: Mr. Murray). The Academic Prefect champions the life of the mind at La Lumiere and is a model of someone with a healthy relationship to academic work. This person’s main responsibility is to cultivate an attitude of curiosity and wonder in our student body via assemblies, lectures, and academic field trips. This prefect highlights the value of academic integrity in our college prep community. In addition, he or she will oversee the peer tutoring program to help students that need academic support. This prefect also offers support to all students and encourages a healthy approach during potentially stressful academic seasons like midterms and final exam week.

  • (Mentor: Mr. Marvin). The Activities Prefect is responsible for school spirit, enthusiasm, and planning events that make La Lumiere life fun. The primary duty of the Activities Prefect is to oversee all student led activities including Spirit Weeks, Headmaster’s Cup competitions, WinterFest, Fall Ball Dance, and Prom, as well as other events that affect morale and student attitudes towards the School.

  • (Mentor: Mr. Blakely). The Admissions Prefect is responsible for assisting in the Admissions Office and working with the Associate Director of Admissions. The primary responsibility is to schedule Blue Key students to host prospective students and families at the School and organize Open House events. In addition, the Admissions Prefect will assist with the communication and recruitment of prospective students over the summer and throughout the school year. It is ideal if they can help with the Freshman Experience in June as well.

  • (Mentor: Mr. Benedict). The Fine Arts Prefect is responsible for planning and promoting activities in the creative arts. The primary duties of the Fine Arts Prefect include hosting Fine Arts Wednesdays, Coffee Houses, and championing visual and performing arts in the La Lumiere community.

  • (Mentor: Mr. Effron). The Spiritual Life Prefect or “Sacristan” is responsible for the promotion of spiritual awareness and pursuit of faith within the School community. The Sacristan Prefect will also be called on to coordinate prayer for Morning Meeting, organize bi-weekly masses, facilitate and interfaith dialogue, open certain school functions with prayer, and to serve as a spiritual leader among our students and faculty.

  • (Mentor: Mr. Berry). The Serviam Prefect is responsible for developing and maintaining a willingness to serve and cultivating a servant’s heart in each community member. The Serviam Prefect’s primary responsibilities will include announcing service opportunities, planning community service, and organizing holiday charity drives. In addition, he or she is responsible for assisting in the planning and implementation of La Lumiere outreach programs in the local community for the academic year.

  • The Global Community Prefect is a champion of and advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion at La Lumiere. This person will focus on the needs of any marginalized students and focus on the well-being of international students and students of color at La Lumiere. This person will directly oversee Global Encounter Assemblies, International Student Partnership, and the Martin Luther King Day programming. He or she will also coordinate with the Hospitality Prefect on the Taste of La Lumiere.

  • (Mentor: Mr. Heffron). The Dorm Life Prefect is responsible for providing leadership among the boarding students, serving as the liaison to the faculty and maintaining morale and a cohesive residential life at La Lumiere School. This prefect will be focused on strengthening the quality of life in the five residence halls at La Lumiere. He or she will work to ensure that the dorms are comfortable, and that there are a variety of weeknight and weekend activities available. Finally, the Dorm Life Prefect will work to foster a spirit of camaraderie and solidarity in each dorm.

  • (Mentor: Ms. Jaques). The Hospitality Prefect is the student liaison to food services. The primary duties of the Hospitality Prefect include cultivating a warm and courteous culture in the Moore House and providing FLIK (our Food Service Provider) with student feedback on meals. This prefect also organizes Senior Lunches, the traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, the Alumni and Family Weekend events, as well as the Taste of La Lumiere.
