La Lumiere Senior Named Evans Scholar

La Lumiere senior Hugo Arias was recently named a Chick Evans Scholarship awardee. Arias is the sixth Evans Scholar at La Lumiere in the last six years. The Evans Scholars Program provides full tuition and housing scholarships for high-achieving and deserving caddies. In order to be eligible to apply, students must demonstrate an excellent academic record in addition to a strong record as a caddie.

Arias recognizes the amazing opportunity that he has earned through his hard work and dedication. This opportunity will allow him to continue down a path toward a future he has envisioned for himself. “I am one step closer on my journey of being the first person in my family to attend university and I am one step closer towards my dream career,” Arias said.

Arias, who is a boarding student from Chicago, is still undecided on his academic future, but is currently planning to enter into a pre-medical program. Arias is currently leaning towards Marquette University because of its strong pre-medical program, but he is also considering Notre Dame and Northwestern, pending admittance.

Arias’ dedication is evident when you hear him talk about his studies and plans. He has learned that there is no such thing as failure. “La Lumiere has taught me to obtain a certain type of discipline that I did not have before in my public school years,” Arias said. “La Lumiere has taught me that failure is just a lower-level of success and that hard work pays off.” Arias has been a part of the La Lumiere community since he was a ninth grader boarding student. During his four years at La Lu, Arias has found lessons in living and learning on campus. “The community here at La Lumiere is so caring that it also taught me that relationships are also important for success as well.”

“We are thrilled for and extremely proud of Hugo. The Evans Scholar program is such an unbelievable opportunity, and what I love about it is it rewards hard work and determination as well as accomplishment and potential,” Head of School Adam Kronk said.

“These young men and women are part of an exceptional incoming class of new scholar caddies from around the nation,” WGA Chairman Joe Desch said in a press release from the Association. “They represent what the Evans Scholars Program has been about since 1930.” In 2022, there will be an estimated 315 caddies nationwide that will be awarded the Evans Scholarship. Arias caddied the past two summers and plans to continue caddying when available.
