La Lumiere senior Wyatt Toothaker has signed his letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic pursuits at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California. Wyatt will be joining the Lion’s rowing team, which competes in the NCAA at the Division I level.

“We are so proud of Wyatt and the hard work he put in over the last four years to earn a scholarship to LMU. Not only are they getting a great rower, they are getting a great addition to their community,” Matt Marvin, La Lumiere’s Director of Athletics and Co-Curriculars, said.

Wyatt started rowing competitively his freshman year at La Lumiere and believes that participation in the sport has greatly impacted his life and been a great stepping stone to LMU. One lesson he learned throughout his four years of rowing was, “to start working harder when you feel you cannot go any further,” Wyatt said, and “to love challenges.” One notable rowing experience that shaped his view on the sport was in his sophomore year during a regatta at Culver: “It was around 40 degrees, extreme wind, rain, and sleet. My partner and I were waiting at the start for about an hour,” Wyatt said. Rather than worrying about the poor weather conditions and losing focus, the team put in a great effort and won the race. The regatta was called off immediately after due to the inclement weather. “It was a great character and team building type of day.”

When deciding on LMU as his next step, Wyatt was drawn to everything that the school offers: the business program, the crew team, the size of the school, the location and overall feeling on campus. “To row D1 is definitely a great opportunity and a huge responsibility, but I know being involved in a sport on that level will only prepare me more for life.”
