Have you ever sat down for your favorite meal and you go back for one last sumptuous bite, only to find that you have already eaten it?  Or to reach for your cup of coffee for the next sip, only to find that it is all gone? It is so easy to hazily drift through each day going from one activity to the next without being fully aware of what we are experiencing! Mindfulness allows us to focus on being fully present, aware of our thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations without judgment. This allows us to notice and appreciate what we are experiencing in the moment.

We have been fortunate at La Lumiere to have Rachael von Eschenbach and Mindi Dugard from Mindful U, an organization that provides yoga and mindfulness lessons to students and teachers, lead our students in a five-session series of mindfulness tools and exercises over the past several weeks. This is part of taking care of our boarding and day students and community in a stressful and anxiety ridden period. Our prep school students are learning techniques that could help them to manage stress, increase self-awareness, and strengthen relationships. If our boarding and day students practice mindfulness over time it could improve their sense of well-being and their physical and mental health both during their prep school days and beyond.
