La Lumiere is proud to present a collection of David C. Langley paintings on exhibit in the Main Office. Joan Langley, Mr. Langley’s wife, is a former member of the prep school’s faculty and three of his children, John ‘74, Elaine ‘80, and David ‘88 are La Lumiere graduates. His paintings are on display for our visitors to take in when on campus for a tour, but also for our day and boarding students to view as they go about their day. Our prep school views this as a unique opportunity to highlight an artist, who has a personal connection to La Lumiere, inspired by the beautiful scenes so close to the campus.

About the Artist

David C. Langley painted the landscapes of the areas in which he lived and traveled. For our La Lumiere community, many of the scenes may be very familiar, since many of his paintings depict landscapes and scenes of nearby Harbor Country and Lake Michigan.

Mr. Langley, who settled in Long Beach, Indiana, concentrated much of his work on sailing and the beach scenes around the lake. His technique for rendering the light and motion of the water and skies worked equally well for his paintings of the Gulf of Mexico, the islands of Hawaii, the Rhone in France, San Francisco Bay, and Key West, Florida. There is a delicateness to the way Mr. Langley rendered these landscapes with watercolors.

Throughout his creative career, Mr. Langley continually returned to the moods of the water and skies. His final painting depicts a sailboat leaving a choppy harbor on a sunny day. The painting was completed the day before Mr. Langley’s death on August 15, 2008. Mr. Langley’s artwork has been shown at various museums and art galleries including the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the South Bend Century Center, and Michigan City's Lubeznik Center for the Arts.
